"What to do When Hate Comes to Town-- A Community Education Seminar in Preparation for September 2nd."

Thursday, August 24, 2006. 7:00-9:00 pm, Gettysburg Fire Hall. Sponsored by the organizers of Community Unity Day, Mayor William Troxell, and the PA Interagency Task Force, consisting of

  • Ann Van Dyke, the PA Human Relations Commission
  • Timothy Johnson, US Department of Justice, Community Relations Service
  • Lt. John Bey, PA State Police, Heritage Affairs Officer
  • Harold Dunbar, Civil Rights Enforcement Section, PA Office of Attorney General 

The purpose of this seminar was to help community members understand:

  • The First Amendment issues involved
  • The recruitment goals and strategies of racial supremacist groups
  • What they have learned about effective responses the day of rallies
  • Community conditions in which hate crimes occur and in which hate groups are able to recruit

Floyd Cochran, civil rights activist, educator, and former high-ranking member of the Aryan Nation, visited the Gettysburg Area the week prior to September 2nd, with several public speaking engagements.
